The Challenge

The Challenge

This app needed to serve as the connective tissue between two very different worlds: building superintendents, closing superintendents, field managers, and specialists working out in the field, and the office staff coordinating behind the scenes. That gap came with real constraints. The app had to house an enormous amount of data (over 500,000 records) spanning the entire build process of every home, all while remaining usable by field crew members who, by the nature of their role, weren't necessarily comfortable navigating complex software. 

This created a core design tension that asked, “how do you visualize that much information, across that many interconnected processes, without overwhelming the very users who need it most on a job site?” On top of the data density challenge, the app needed full offline functionality, since field crews are often working in locations with unreliable or no cell service, yet still need access to critical build information and the ability to log updates that sync once connectivity returns. Beyond the core build-tracking functionality, the app also needed to support everyday operational needs, such as tracking PTO, viewing sales performance, and knowing where teammates were working on any given day, all without adding friction to a tool people needed to rely on constantly.

Given the sheer density of information this app needed to hold, my approach centered on breaking complexity into digestible, purpose-built modules rather than trying to flatten everything into a single experience. The dashboard became the anchor of the app. This included a personalized home base showing yearly goals, an always-current year-over-year sales chart, weekly weather, and quick access to PTO and time-off management, giving users the information most relevant to their day without digging through menus. 

For field crews specifically, visual clarity was the priority over feature density on any single screen, favoring clear iconography, straightforward navigation, and information hierarchy that didn't assume a high level of tech fluency. One of the most complex features was the interactive team location map, which ties into each user's phone location tracking to show, in real time, where every field team member currently is. Rather than leaving that map as a static or purely functional tool, I layered in mini-profiles accessible with a simple tap on a team member's icon, surfacing contact information and their current neighborhood assignment at a glance. This turned a logistics feature into a genuinely useful communication tool, letting office staff and other field members find and reach the right person without a phone tree. 

I also built out a personal profile section allowing users to customize their experience with custom wallpaper backgrounds and manage their own notifications and personal info, which was a small but intentional choice to make a dense, work-focused tool feel a little more personal for the people using it every day. Designing for offline functionality meant thinking carefully about what data needed to be locally accessible versus synced, ensuring the app remained fully usable in the field regardless of connectivity, then reconciling seamlessly once back online. 

The result is a single, cohesive app that manages to hold an enormous amount of operational complexity while still feeling approachable to a workforce that spans a high- tech office staff to the hands-on field crews building the homes. This proved that good UX isn't about simplifying what a tool does, but about making complexity feel manageable for the person using it.
